Personality:
To describe Howl is a near-impossible task, though not entirely something that is not tangible. He is a puzzle, for lack of a better word, and there are many levels to him.
Level one would be the Howl the world thinks is real.
This Howl is the absolute textbook definition of narcissism - placing himself above all and making sure that no matter what occurs, he appears to be the best he can be. To make sure that he appears as such, as the perfect man for the perfect woman (or man, because really, it depends on the situation), he is some kind of chivalrous gentleman, as well. Despite the fact that he's got quite a low tolerance for people who place him in stereotypes, and people who seem to have some kind of ability to piss him off even with his attempts at niceties, he tries his very best to appear to be the kind of guy you want to be your groom at a wedding - or best man, once again with the dependency on situations. It's due to this that he's one of the most charming boys you'll ever meet, and if he doesn't sweep you off your feet after the first five words he speaks to you, then you're either not human, or made of granite.
The second level of Howl is the wizard with potential.
Howl has this capacity to manipulate the elements of the world and therefore turn them into something more touchable, more tangible. He is capable of bringing fire to his hand and yet not burn himself, and capable of transforming into different things. Nonetheless, magic is his passion, his one true love, and when it's challenged, he isn't as princely as one may think. Howl becomes competitive if one has magical abilities, and he goes insane to improve said abilities if the person seems even the least bit capable. Magic is his drug, his dependency on it is intense, and if it's taken away from him, then he will wither. He's been using it a lot, lately, to the point of his difficulty to transform back to his original form, and although Calcifer, a spirit meant to take care of him, warns him of this - Howl remains stubborn and uses it over and over despite said warnings. There is nothing that can hold him back from magic, and his accomplishments in wizardry are obviously because of this. In fact, he's been asked by the King of his country to serve - and it's because of that request that level one was made.
The third and final level is the tormented young man named Howell Jenkins.
Howell is frightened. Howl is his mask, and everything Howl is good at, Howell is horrible at. Howell is unsure of himself and what it is he wants to do, unsure of the things that he has to do, unsure of whether or not he's doing what's meant for him. He traded his heart for a demon named Calcifer to serve him and misses that heart ever so slightly, even though trading it had lead to his endless amount of magical ability. Howell's still unable to decipher whether or not that was a good choice or a horrible one, and although his counterpart displays the epitome of perfection - Howell on the other hand is a mind-numbingly confused teenager. He is afraid of death, of love, and of everything he shouldn't be afraid of yet. Howell is.. conflicted and insecure. Howl is his attempt at self-defense, and although Howl is perfect, it doesn't mean all the fear's ebbed away. Rather, it's been magnified, and Howell just doesn't know what to do with his life. The confusion is overwhelming - and if he doesn't try hard enough he just might crack.
History:
Howell Jenkins was born to Maria and Anthony Jenkins on a rainy day in September, in a country named Wales located in Europe. It was obvious since birth that he had a special ability, as when he grew hot the wind grew strong, and when he cried the sun began to shine. His parents had not noticed this at first, waving it off as lucky coincidences, but Howell knew - and he grew up attempting to make magic with little hands.
He gained a control for it at the age of two, and despite his parents' wishes to send him to school, Howell did not give consent. Whenever he went, he always did make a lot of mischief, such as setting some things aflame and moving things around with the elemental power of wind. He was kicked out of countless schools, and when his parents realized that school was simply not the place for him, they decided to keep him at home where he could properly practice his gift for the dark art of wizardry. So he did, and he gained experience, but Howell was never good enough in his standards.
It was on one day when a shooting star fell from the sky that Howell realized that he could bring his magical abilities to some kind of penultimate high - and it was when he was a boy of eight that he traded his heart for the servitude of a demon named Calcifer. Calcifer not only gave him more power and a higher sense of magic - but also was very loyal, standing by his master and choosing Howell over all.
When Howell was nine, his parents passed away during a terrible storm - and this was what caused him to go through a nervous breakdown.
The death of his parents lead to him being alone in this world - without a family, without a home, without a future. He used magic to create his new home, of course, which was a moving castle that had a door that opened to different worlds. He grew older and entered a wizard's training school under a Madame by the name of Suliman, and, naturally, graduated at top honors. It was during his stay in training that he developed a new persona, the male named Howl, and made a name for himself under different identities to keep the King of the country from recognizing all the wondrous things Howl has done underneath one name. Howl, therefore, became the great wizard he wanted to be for so long (but then again, his hunger could not be quenched, as magic made up for the lack of family he had), and grew famous through different names.
The King had grown a liking to said personas, and made sure that Howl and his many, many names were involved in many, many things. Howl, naturally, had no want for serving the country (because it was much too stressful for his already-stressful life), but followed orders - and through that discovered that his favorite method of transformation is into the form of a bird, as strange as that is.
When Howl turned sixteen, he found a boy named Markl, who wanted to be as great a wizard as him. Howl's heart just felt something for him, some kind of similarity between the both of them that could not be ignored, and he took the lad in to teach him the art of wizardry. Howl has been known far and wide for his charming demeanor and his way with magic, and in fact had charmed a witch as well. He felt something for her before realizing that she was short of beautiful, and at this point in time, he knows she's looking for him - and that she'll destroy whoever gets in her way.
But despite all of Howl's success, Howell is still in his heart, frightened and cold; and God knows when the weaker among the two will be able to break past the persona and make a life of his own.

Sample RP:
The idea of failure is the most comical thing to Howl, as failure is not in his dictionary, never has been, and never will be. The little inklings of inability and mediocrity mean nothing to him, and they pass by him as though he were made of nothing. The harsh reality, however, is that failure is a possibility to every human being, no matter the name, no matter the talent, and as Howl attempts to do one of the most important things he's ever had to do, and fails, a feeling of emptiness stretches throughout his body - from his heart to his gut to everything else.
He failed to make breakfast.
Perhaps the problem with this was that, for one thing, he was attempting to juggle cooking and door-watching and Calcifer-talking and magic-training, and really, who spends more than ten minutes trying to perfect a spell if they know there are eggs in a frying pan? It's a frighteningly retarded thing, and when Howl comes back and sees said sources of protein reduced to nothing but charred, black, desolate objects, his clear blue eyes turn into a darker shade of blue, and he turns angry. Failure is not something he is accustomed to, and he picks up the pan and stairs at the remains of what was supposed to be the most important meal of the day. Part of him wants to fling said pan against the wall, the consequence given to something that reminds him all-too much of the failure that is Howell Jenkins, and yet part of him wants to eat it to prove that failure means nothing to him, that nothing can bring his broken, real self to life.
But who is he kidding?
Howl, instead, throws the dump into a trash can and bids it adieu, and sets it on fire inside without burning the object it's contained in. Now it's ashes, not a black, disgusting thing, and Howl closes the trash can and makes his way make towards the frying pan. He picks up another egg, begins to work on breakfast, and this time tries not to be distracted by his lover - the beautiful woman named Magic.
He fails and burns the eggs again.
And the process is repeated over and over.
